Review: Two Covers of "That's All Right"

Timmy Sean

“That’s All Right” (single)

2022 Noisewater Records

Rocker Timmy Sean recently had the opportunity to record at the Legendary Sun Studios in Memphis, Tennessee. As a rite of passage, he tried his hand at a cover of Elvis Presley’s first single, “That’s All Right.”

No stranger to recording all of the instruments himself, Timmy Sean approaches this classic tune with excitement, grit and fire. Staying just close enough to the original arrangement to be recognizable, he adds his own flare and power to make it his own. The guitar solo here is a departure from the original but it really fits into the vibe that Timmy Sean is presenting here.

Johnathan Pushkar

“That’s All Right” (single)

2022 Jem Records

When in Rome…err Memphis.

While working on a project for LEGO in Memphis, Tennessee Johnathan Pushkar was given the chance to record his own interpretation of this classic tune.

As one would imagine, Pushkar clearly sounds excited to be recording “That’s All Right” in the studio where it all began. Can you blame him? You can hear the smile on his face. Recording this song, in that studio. A musician's dream come true, no doubt.

A talented musician with two albums under his belt, Pushkar’s recording stays faithful to the original arrangement and that’s where this single fails to capture the moment. While there is absolutely nothing wrong with recording a faithful cover of a legendary song, I would have preferred it if Pushkar had stamped some of his own personality on the song.
